GCSE - Short Course

Religious Studies


At The FitzWimarc School, we follow the Edexcel GCSE Short Course in Religious Studies. All pupils study for this examination in their Modular Studies course in Years 10 and 11. The syllabus consists of five modules covering the following areas:

  1. Marriage and the Family - religious teachings on marriage, divorce and the family

  2. Social Harmony - views on the roles of men & women, multi-ethnicity and multi-faith religious pluralism

  3. Believing in God - religious experiences, the problem of evil & suffering and logical arguments for belief in God

  4. Issues of Life and Death - the sanctity of life, views on life after death, abortion and euthanasia

  5. Religion and the Media - worship & magazine programmes, documentaries and issues in soaps and drama

The final examination is a single two hour paper, which accounts for 100% of the marks. Religious beliefs and views are based largely on Christianity and Judaism, although other and non-religious points of view are also considered.
