![]() Notre Dame Cathedral, ChartresThese are the two spires and western facade of Notre Dame cathedral, Chartres, in France. This cathedral has an amazing wealth of sculpture and stained glass.Bishop Fulbert began the building of the cathedral in the 11th century on the site of a former non-Christian place of worship. This cathedral was later destroyed by fire, but rebuilding work was started at the end of the 12th century. A second spire was added and completed in 1513. At the western end of the cathedral is the Royal Portal. The Central portal contains a relief sculpture of Christ in Majesty, whilst scenes of the last judgment are shown in the sculpture of the portal of the south transept. The sculpture of the Creation in the portal to the north transept is magnificent. As far as the stained glass windows are concerned, there are over 150 of them, most of them still containing glass from the 13th century. |
