St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula is situated at Treurenberg Hill in Brussels, Belgium. A church had already been built on the site in the 11th century. When the relics of St. Gudula were transferred to the newly-built church in 1047 it quickly assumed the ascendancy over the other churches in Brussels.

Originally, the St. Gudula church was built in the Romanesque style but, from the 13th century onwards continued work changed it into a gothic style cathedral. The Western, gothic facade was completed between 1450 and 1490.

Renovations to the church took place, almost continuously during the 20th century, finally being completed in 1999. The marriage of the Belgian Crown Prince Philippe (son of Albert II) to Princess Mathilda took place in the cathedral on 4 December 1999.
