![]() St. Niklaas Church, GhentThe St Niklaas Church in Ghent, Belgium, is one of the central features of the city and, along with the Belfort, seen in the background, and St. Bavo's Cathedral provides one of the famous three towers.This had been the site of a Roman church in the 11th-12th centuries, which was probable destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt and enlarged in the 13th century in the Gothic style of this region (Scheldegotiek). At the eastern end of the church one can see the later Gothic structure of elegant flying buttresses. Visitors receive the following message: |
