Glasgow Cathedral

The cathedral is associated with St Kentigern (or, St Mungo). He died in 612 AD, but the diocese was not established until the 12th century, an earlier building being consecrated as a cathedral in 1136. The present building has not been the seat of a bishop for over 300 years.

Comprehensive rebuilding work took place during the 13th century. The east end of the church was completed before the middle of the century and the nave finished by about 1300. In the 15th century, the 220ft spire was added.

Robert Blackadder was the first Archbishop of Glasgow and was responsible for many decorative additions to the church.

Much was taken during the Reformation and, eventually, the use of the cathedral was shared between various Presbyterian congregations.

During the 19th century, two medieval towers at the western end of the church were demolished. After that restoration work was carried out on the cathedral.
