Originally, this was the abbey church of St. Peter, but became a cathedral in 1541 (Henry VIII).

The building of the cathedral began in 1089 and some features of Norman architecture still remain, notably, the nave. Extensive reconstruction took place in the 1330s with the support and patronage of Edward III. This work was in the Perpendicular style of the Gothic architecture of the period.

The foundation of the original abbey was about 681 AD. It became Bendictine from 1022. Edward II was buried in the church in 1327.
