![]() Cologne CathedralThis is the Dom, the great Gothic cathedral of Cologne, Germany.It was started in 1248 and was the fifth building to be erected on the site. After that, the east chancel was consecrated in 1322. The first floor of the south tower was completed in 1395. However, it was not until 1842 that the foundation of the extension of the cathedral was laid. On the 15th October 1880 the last stone of the south tower was laid, in the presence of Emperor William I. The work was completed after 632 years. Damage was caused to the Cathedral by bombs in World War 2 necessitating repair work after the war. |
