- Daniel
- Daniel was a Hebrew of the southern kingdom of Judah who was taken to Babylon to live as an exile at the time of the conquest of Judah by King Nebuchadnezzar. When God gave him the interpretation of the king's dream, he became an adviser to Nebuchadnezzar and subsequent rulers. The book in the Old Testament bearing his name, tells his story and details of the visions he received.
- Dark Ages
- This is the name given to the Middle Ages from the fifth century (the decline of classical culture) through to the fourteenth century (the start of the Renaissance in Italy) because of the apparent intellectual and moral ignorance or darkness of this period.
- David
- The second and great king of Israel who reigned about 1000 BCE and became king on the death of King Saul. He was of the tribe of Judah and, of note, killed the Philistine champion Goliath and wrote many of the Psalms (songs) in the Bible.
- Saint David: the patron saint of Wales. Legend has it that this British saint belonged to a noble family. He is said to have founded twelve monasteries and finally settled at Mynyw or Menevia, now St. Davids.
He died round about 601 AD and his festival day is 1 March.
- Dharma (or Dhamma)
- The teachings of Buddha.
- Divali
- A Hindu festival of lights. It celebrates the end of the year and the beginning of a new year.
- Dukkha (or Duhkha)
- In Buddhism, the concept of suffering - the unsatisfactory nature of life. All life is suffering (dukkha)
