Icon (or Ikon)
An icon is a painting or mosaic in an Eastern Orthodox Church, representing Jesus or one of the saints. It is used as an aid to prayer and worship. Icons are deliberately NOT absolutely lifelike portrayals but are representations so that there is no danger of idolatry.
Iconostasis
In an Eastern Orthodox Church, it is a screen, with icons on it, which separates the sanctuary from the nave.
Immortality
The idea of living forever, usually by life continuing in the afterlife. There is a Christian belief in the immortality of the soul - that part of us which goes on for ever, even beyond the death of the body.
Incarnation
The term for the Christian teaching that God became man in Jesus Christ. It comes from the Latin for "in flesh".
Initiation
A ceremony or rite for bringing people into a faith community or into adulthood; it is also a term used for the ceremony for bringing a new born child into a religious comnmunity, often connected with naming.
Intercession
Intercession is a particular type of prayer which is made to God on behalf of others.
