Laity
A term used to refer to the ordinary people in a religious tradition as opposed to the official leaders and specialists (for example, the clergy).
Lectern
This is a reading desk used in churches for the public reading of the Bible. In traditional, medieval style churches, it usually stands at the front of the nave, on the other side from the pulpit. Many are in the shape of an eagle standing on an orb, thus carrying the Gospel, or the Word of God, into all the world.
Lectionary
List of scriptural passages for reading systematically throughout the year.
Lent
Lent is the period of fasting and penitence, which, on the Christian calendar, leads up to the festival of Easter. It begins with Ash Wednesday and the fast is broken with breakfast on Good Friday. Halfway through Lent, the fast can be broken for Mothering Sunday.
Liturgy
A prescribed ritual of worship to God, such as Evensong of Eucharist.
Lord's Supper
This is another name for the Holy Communion, or Breaking of Bread, or the Eucharist. It was used by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Corinthians.

These pages will be added to in the future. If there is a religious term or word you do not understand, why not e-mail us? It can then be added to the glossary.
