- Pentecost
- A Jewish festival which comes 50 days after Passover. The word Pentecost comes from the Greek for "fifty". It is also known as the festival of Shavuot (Hebrew word for 'weeks' - it comes 7 weeks after Passover) or, simply, as the feast of Weeks. It is an early harvest festival when, in ancient times, the firstfruits of the harvest would have been brought to God.
- It is also a Christian festival, known as Whitsun, which is celebrated as the day when the first Christians, the disciples, received the gift of the Holy Spirit as recorded in the Bible in Acts chapter 2. It comes about 50 days after Easter.
- Protestant
- Major division of the Christian church protesting against Roman Catholic belief and practice (from the Reformation - beginning of the 16th century - onwards). With the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, it forms one of the three major branches of the church.
- Pulpit
- This is a raised platform, usually enclosed, from which sermons are preached.
