Vaisya (or, Vaishya)
The third of the four categories (or, Varnas) of the 'caste' system in Hinduism. The Vaisyas are the merchants.
Vatican
An independent state within Rome, Italy. It is the residence of the Pope and the administrative centre of the Roman Catholic Church.
Viaticum
Holy Communion given to a person when they are very close to dying.
Virgin Birth
This is the Christian teaching about the miraculous conception of Jesus by Mary through the Holy Spirit. In other words, it is believed that Jesus did not have an earthly, human father.
Vision
A visible revelation from God, like a dream but usually experienced while the recipient is still awake.
Vows
Serious promises, such as those made by a bride and groom at their wedding, made in the sight of God and before witnesses.
