Xavier
St. Francis Xavier (1506 - 1562) was a Spanish Jesuit missionary to the Indies, India and Japan. In India, he founded mission stations and, in Japan, a church which has carried on. His feast day is 3 December.
Yad Vashem
This is the holocaust memorial, bearing all the names of the Nazi extermination camps, which is at Jerusalem.
Yamulkah
This is the small skull cap, also known as a Kippah or Capel, which Jewish men wear when praying, reading the Torah and in the synagogue. Some men wear it all the time, because one might pray at any time, or hear the words of the Torah being read.
Yom Hashoah
This is the special day in January to remember the holocaust and its victims.
Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. It falls on the 10th day of the Jewish New Year and is a day of absolute fasting and declaration of repentance. It means "Day of Covering" (i.e. sins are covered) but is usually translated as "Day of Atonement".
Zen
From the Japanese word meaning "meditation". It is the form of Buddhism which developed in Japan.
