The Disciples of Jesus

Jesus associated with all kinds of people. He was often criticised for befriending people who were despised by others, beggars and thieves, poor people and those whom the devoutly religious called "sinners". But Jesus also had followers amongst the influential people in His society too:
  • Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were two sisters and a brother who lived at Bethany, very close to Jerusalem. Jesus seemed to visit them quite often.
  • Mary Magdalene was a devoted follower of Jesus. It is said that Jesus had set her free from seven evil spirits.
  • There was a Roman centurion who had great faith in Jesus. His servant was desperately ill and needed healing.
  • Jairus was the leader of a synagogue who came to Jesus for help for his daughter.
  • Zacchaeus was a hated tax-collector, whom Jesus befriended and visited for a meal.
  • Bartimaeus was a blind beggar who Jesus healed. Afterwards he followed Jesus
  • Simon the Pharisee was a wealthy man who invited Jesus home for dinner
  • Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were members of the Jewish ruling council - the Sanhedrin, but they were also secret followers of Jesus. When Jesus was buried, Nicodemus brought costly spices for the burial. Joseph had already provided his own new tomb for Jesus to be buried in.

The word 'disciple' comes from the Latin word 'to learn'. It is a translation of the New Testament Greek word 'mathetes' which means a learner or a pupil. Jesus had many such disciples who followed Him as He moved about Palestine teaching and doing mighty works. From these, He chose twelve to be responsible for preparing the way for Him and, after His death and resurrection, for carrying the message of the good news into all the world.
