Auto-Antonyms

  • An antonym is a word which has the opposite meaning of another word (e.g. "up" is the opposite of "down").

  • The term "auto-antonym" is one that has been invented (and, therefore, probably not in any dictionary). It refers to words which are spelled the same, but which have opposite meanings. One good example is the word "cleave". The verb, "to cleave", means "to split apart", but it also means "to stick firmly to something."

  • Do you know of any others? If you find any, please let us know by completing the contact form below. Your contribution, with due acknowledgement, will appear on this page.
