Highest Abortion Rates

Last year, abortions reached a record number with more than 190,000 women terminating their pregnancies. This is an increase of 3% over the 2002 figure.

The previous record was just under 190,000 (187,000) in 1998.

A total of 37,043 abortions were carried out on girls aged 15 to 19 and almost 1200 on girls under the age of 15 years.

A representative from the charity LIFE made the comment, "Children from primary school onwards are encouraged to think that if they get pregnant, there is a free and easy method of ending it."
