The Rayleigh Clock

The Clock is clearly visible as you drive or walk along Rayleigh High Street. It also bears the Coat of Arms which was granted to the former Urban District Council of Rayleigh. Depicted on the Coat of Arms is a deer or doe. The name 'Rayleigh' comes from the Saxon words 'Raege' (a doe) and 'Leah' (a clearing). On the shield there is also a seax (from the three seaxes of the Essex Coat of Arms), and a wyvern. The motto is in Latin "In Reliquom Laboramus" - "We are working for the future."
