The Windmill

Just a couple of hundred yards from the High Street is Rayleigh windmill. By 1824, there were five mills in the town, but the one on London Hill is the only one surviving and now houses a small museum. The Rayleigh Antiquarian and Natural History Society leased the mill from Rayleigh Council in 1970 for this purpose.

The mill stands on what was the outer bailey of Rayleigh Castle. It was built in c.1798.
