Charoset

Charoset (or Haroset) is one of the symbolic food items on the Passover Seder plate for the celebration of Passover (Pesach). It is a reminder of the mortar, which the Hebrews used for their enforced building work when they were slaves in Egypt at the time of Moses. It is designed to have the consistency of mortar.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of walnuts
  • 2 large apples (sharp)
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • ¼ cup of raisins
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of red wine (Passover wine)
  • Having peeled and cored the apples, chop them up together with the walnuts and raisins.
  • Mix in the cinnamon, honey and wine until a consistent mixture is obtained.
  • The Charoset is now ready to place on the Seder plate.
