Onion Bhajis
Onion Bhajis may be eaten at any time and, possibly, you have already enjoyed them. They are particularly popular at the Hindu festival of Holi.
Ingredients
- 3 large onions
- 150 g of chick pea flour
- 7 tablespoons of vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
- ½ teaspoon of ground turmeric
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- a pinch of chilli powder (up to ½ teaspoon to taste)
- Slice the onions
- Put four tablespoons of vegetable oil in a frying pan and fry the turmeric and mustard seeds together - the seeds will begin to pop when ready.
- Reduce the heat and add the sliced onions. Fry gently for about 10 minutes.
- Take the chick pea flour and add 1 tablespoon of this, stirring it in. Keep on adding the flour until it has all been stirred in.
- Now add the salt and a pinch or two of chilli powder - up to a teaspoon if you like it hotter.
- Remove the pan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool down. When cool, separate it into four pieces and mould each piece into a ball shape. Flatten these using a spatula.
- Heat the oil that is left and fry the bhajis until they are brown all over. Use a spatula to turn when necessary.
