ASSESSMENT

Assessment is part of the process of teaching and learning. It is making informed judgements about pupils' achievements and progress, drawing particular attention to positive achievements.

On a week to week basis, regular class and home work will be marked on a 1 to 10 scale for attainment and an A to E scale for effort in accordance with the following statements. This list is displayed in the classrooms for reference.

R.E. Day-to Day Marking

Attainment Rating

9/10 and 10/10 You have worked to the highest standard
8/10 You have worked to a good standard
7/10 You have worked to an above average standard
6/10 You have worked to an average standard
4/10 and 5/10 You have worked to below average standard
2/10 and 3/10 You have found this piece of work difficult
1/10 You have found this work very difficult
Effort Rating

A Your effort is excellent
B Your effort is good
C Your effort is generally satisfactory
D Your effort is disappointing
E Your effort is poor

In the longer term, as far as R.E. is concerned, we are involved in the development of cognitive competence and of perceptions, attitudes and values. A 'can do' type of tick list is not really appropriate for R.E. The 'Open Worlds' syllabus sets out a very clear statement of the purpose of assessment in Religious Education. The requirements are intended to inform pupils, teachers and parents about progress being made in respect of learning through R.E.:

  • Pupils will be able to gain positive feedback about their progress, which will
    1. give them a sense of achievement and make them want to achieve,
    2. help them to take a positive view of R.E. and increase their interest in the subject,
    3. help raise the quality of their learning.
  • Teachers will be better informed of pupils' knowledge, understanding and abilities, and so better able to ensure that future learning is appropriate. Differentiated activities will be provided where necessary.
  • Parents will be informed about their children's achievements in R.E.
