YEAR 10 SYLLABUS
Introduction to GCSE Short Course in Religious Studies
Every pupil studies for the Edexcel GCSE short course in Religious Studies. The full course is offered as an option when pupils choose their upper school programme. As from September 2003 the timetable will be amended so that all pupils
will have one hour of R.E. per week in both Years 10 and 11. We have chosen to follow the Edexcel syllabus A, Unit A. This is "Religion and Life based on a study of Christianity and Judaism."
The content of the syllabus is contained in 5 modules: Believing in God; Matters of Life and Death; Marriage and the Family; Social Harmony; Religion and the Media.
Aims:
The aims specified in the syllabus are to give students opportunities to:
- acquire knowledge and develop understanding of beliefs, values and traditions of one or more religions
- consider the influence of the beliefs, values and traditions associated with one or more religions
- consider religious and other responses to moral issues.
- identify, investigate and respond to fundamental questions of life raised by religion and human experience, including questions about the meaning and purpose of life.
- develop skills relevant to the study of religion.
Knowledge, Skills and Understanding:
This requires students to acquire knowledge and understanding of:
- the content and concepts in the 5 "Religion and Life" modules.
- the specialist vocabulary involved
- issues arising from the study of religion
The following skills need also to be developed:
- recall, select, organise and deploy knowledge of the syllabus content
- show the nature, relevance and application of religion by using description, analysis and explanation.
- give a personal response to religious/moral issues arising from the study of religion
- evaluate different responses to religious and moral issues using relevant evidence and argument.
- communicate effectively using appropriate language and terminology
Assessment Objectives:
Students must demonstrate their ability to:
- recall, select, organise and deploy knowledge of the syllabus content.
- describe, analyse and explain the relevance and application of a religion or religions.
- evaluate different responses to religious and moral issues, using relevant evidence and argument.
The assessment is by one, final examination (100% of marks). |
