My love of languages (and indeed of language itself) was first ignited by my late French and German master, Mr E. Bone at Palmer's School in Grays. In fact, this quiet, unassuming man, with his wide background knowledge, also inspired my views of education as not just a means to an end, but as an end in itself. Other teachers whose influence in the sphere of language was invaluable were Mr G. Etter (German), Mr Williams (French and a lightning course in Spanish), Mr G. Ross (English), Mr E. Moorhouse (English), and Messrs. Phillips and Harris (Latin). This sound start in life has provided me with more enjoyment than could ever be bought with all the gold of Midas in today's society of instant, passive entertainment.

Of course, there were many others who shared their enthusiasm and created a love of many other aspects of learning. In the realm of Science, my Sixth Form Studies on the 'Arts' side (Languages) were broadened by a fascinating General Studies course which included Calculus, an introduction to nuclear physics, astronomy (complete with 6 inch Newtonian Reflector Telescope), and Biology. Astronomy was a hobby of mine for a number of years and Science was a subject I taught in the Lower School here at FitzWimarc during the 1980s.

Strangely enough, I have to say that 'Divinity' (R.E.) was far from inspiring when I was at school. However, my degree is in Religious Studies, but that is another story.

The reason for this rather personal introduction is that I would like to share what I have enjoyed from various languages as our 'Thoughts for the Day' during the Summer Holidays. This is all the more fitting given that The FitzWimarc School is a Language College.
