This curious stairway, spiralling round to an opening that goes nowhere, has been the cause of many questions. It was discovered
when the walls of the church were being repaired during the 1912 restoration of the church. Once upon a time, the stairway led to the
rood loft (see information on the rood screen page) which was above the chancel screen. The stairway had
been blocked up since the early 16th century.
