In the Middle Ages chests such as this were used for the safe keeping of documents, books, vestments and so on.
Chests of a very early date tended to be hollowed out of a solid block of oak and were known as dug-outs. It has several locks
and clasps, the keys to which would be kept by separate individuals, so that no one person could open the box. At a later period,
it is possible that it was used as an alms chest to receive voluntary gifts for the poor.
