This font is of Victorian origin. The font is used for baptisms (christenings). Traditionally
it is situated close to the entrance to symbolise the idea that this is the first step in becoming
part of the family of the church.
This font is made of Caen stone and was given to the church in 1870. The carved font cover was a gift from parents whose children were baptised at the font while Rev. A G. Fryer was Rector of Rayleigh (1904 to 1931). The design represents the Perpendicular architectural style of the church building. It was carved by the firm of Clark & Son of Llandaff, who were the firm responsible for the beautiful woodwork in the choir of Llandaff Cathedral.
